U-shaped steel sheet piles have long been familiar to designers and constructors because of the long-standing traditions and technologies, and are widely used for permanent structures, temporarily installed soil-retaining construction, and temporary coffering.

Hat and H-steel sheet pile.

This combined steel sheet pile provides high section modulus (2200~16000cm3/m) and high moment inertia(110000~990000cm4/m).

This sheet pile is effective for narrow areas cantilever retaining wall and deep-water piers/bank protection construction.

Features

Hat and H-steel sheet pile utilizes (1) high section modulus and size variation of H-steel (2) continuous wall make-up ability and good constructability of hat-shaped steel sheet piles, with the world's largest width (900 mm), and combines these by intermittent fillet welding, which comes in high section modulus and a variety of sizes. Since it fully makes use of continuous wall make-up ability and economical H-steel as principal struclare member, it thus provides a structure of low cost according to the ground status of the construction area.

This type of construction is effective for narrow urban spaces, soft-ground areas, and deep-water pier and bank protection construction.

A highly rigid steel sheet pile, known as "Nippon Steel's Hat and H-steel sheet pile," achieved by combining hat-shaped steel sheet piles and H-steel, was applied to the rivetment in the Pasig-Marikina River improvement project.

Features

Our straight web-type sheet piles (specifications: YSP-FXL, YSP-FL) have the following excellent characteristics:

1. Use of 38-m sheet pile (the world's longest, our conventional maximum pile length is 25 m)

  • The use of a simple 38-m long sheet pile without longitudinal joint welding is possible even for construction in deep water and deep underground.
  • The omission of a welding joint greatly improves the cell quality and structural reliability/constructability.

2. Maximum joint strength of 5,880 kN/m (world's highest)

  • The fitting (joint) portions have high tensile strength, realizing the high structural reliability of the cell.
  • Since the large diameter of the cell, which applies a larger load to the sheet piles, becomes possible, both the embedded length into the seabed and the weight of the steel used can be reduced.

3. A variety of sizes

  • There are two types of plate thicknesses (web thicknesses) available: 9.5 mm (FL) and 12.7 mm (FXL).
  • Straight web type of SYW295 and SY295 offers joint strength of 3920kn/m and over for YSP-FL,and 5880kn/m and over for YSP-FXL

NSSMC has proposed various solutions for steel products and structures by making the most of the characteristics of straight web-type sheet piles, right from the design phase, and has achieved improvements in the procurement of steel products and the construction method and shortening of the construction term, while also indirectly supporting solutions to various problems on-site.

The construction term can be largely shortened.

"Straight web-type sheet pile cell construction method" allows operators to join sheet piles in cell form at a location where there is little impact from waves, whereupon they can then bring them to an installation site for driving. Therefore, this type of construction can largely shorten the construction term and reduce the period that construction affects marine traffic.

Features

1. Large vertical bearing capacity

  • By driving the pipe piles into firm support ground, they exhibit a large vertical bearing capacity.

2. High intrusion performance

  • Since the material strength is high, there is only minimal fear regarding material damage against strong striking power, and the pipe piles display high intrusion performance into the ground.

3. Large horizontal resisting force

  • Since the pipe piles have excellent flexural capacity, they can exhibit large horizontal resisting power.

4. Ease of production of longer piles and joining piles

  • Longer products can be manufactured, and as joining piles by site welding is also easy, it is possible to apply them to deep water and deep underground structures.

5. Correspondence to versatile applications and construction conditions

  • The combination of abundant materials, dimensions, and construction methods allows these piles to cope with versatile applications and construction conditions.

New runway at Haneda Airport (Japan)

The various technologies of Nippon Steel Group were utilized for the new runway at Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport), which opened in October 2010.

Features

1. Ease of construction

  • The use of large-diameter steel pipes facilitates the construction of walls with high cross-sectional performance, which was difficult to realize when conventional steel sheet piles were used.

2. Large horizontal resistance force

  • These pipes have excellent bending resistance, enabling a large horizontal resistance force to be generated.

3. Flexible installation

  • The joints have margins, enabling the piles to be easily installed close together. In addition, by changing the attachment position of the joints, the piles can be installed freely in either a circular or rectangular configuration.

4. Ease of production of long jointed piles

  • Long piles can be made easily. In addition, jointed piles can be easily fabricated by on-site welding. These piles are thus suitable for deep water and deep subterranean structures.

5. Can readily prevent water seepage

  • By pouring mortar into the pile joints, these piles can easily prevent water seepage.
